What a difference a few weeks make amid the coronavirus outbreak. In February 2020, the jobs picture was the brightest in history. The data was eye-popping.

Companies hired 273,000 workers sending the unemployment rate down the lowest-level ever. The unemployment rate plummeted to just 3.5 percent.

That all changed thanks to the coronavirus as countless companies deemed unessential were forced to close their doors and lay off their workers.

But what is considered essential to meet consumer demand might surprise you – from utilities to telecommunications.

Big companies such as Amazon, Kroger, and Walmart have all announced they’re hiring workers by the many thousands.

In general unessential businesses are bars, casinos, concerts, restaurants, gyms, movie studios, sporting events and worship services. (Personally, I regret the latter because of the emotional and mental-health benefits but I realize social-distancing is important.)

Meantime, there’s a mobile application, myworkchoice.com, that’s bringing employers and workers together in as little as one day.

Solutions If You Want to Rise to the Top in Innovation

MyWorkChoice is innovative but it’s not new. It’s been around for three decades filling temporary jobs. It’s client employers range from Shutterfly to Nordstrom.

The company completed its first growth-funding round of $3 million in January, 2020.

“MyWorkChoice is delivering exactly what today’s warehousing, manufacturing, distribution and call center companies need – a ready and trained W-2 workforce that can flex to meet their production and workforce needs,” said MyWorkChoice CEO Tana Greene.

These are 1099 jobs. MyWorkChoice workers are treated as employees covered by workers compensation and benefits.

Applicants can apply through the app or Web site, undergo a background check, interview on the telephone and start training which is often online.

Is Your Business Model Set for Innovation? How to Find Out

“After a truly unprecedented two years of growth, we are excited by the continued MyWorkChoice adoption across the United States, and plan to invest further in the current communities where we work to support our customers’ growing needs for flexible workforce solutions,” said Ms. Greene after getting the first round of funding.

MyWorkChoice serves eight states: Arizona, California, Indiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas.
